The YOB-411 oboe is available with a plastic upper joint and wood lower joint. (YOB-411P) 441-A
The same design as the 441 has been crafted with a body made entirely out of durable, maintenance-free ABS resin. This artificial material offers a sound as close to that of grenadilla as possible, yet is free from the dangers of cracking when played in difficult climatic conditions such as extreme dryness. The body has a matte finish which is almost indistinguishable from that of natural grenadilla. 441-P
An innovative concept in oboe design, the 441P combines the best of features of both other models for an oboe with rich warm granadilla tone, yet which is highly resistant to cracking. The lower joint and bell are of the same select quality grenadilla as the 441, but the upper joint is made of matte finish ABS resin for crack-proof durability. This model was created for players who prefer the natural resonance of grenadilla wood, but perform in conditions of less than ideal temperature and humidity. 441
The YOB-441 is made of the finest quality aged and seasoned grenadilla wood for a rich professional sound. This is the same material as used on our Custom models and has been carefully crafted in a similar manner. The size and placement of the toneholes is also the same, giving even and accurate intonation and making the 441 the most 'Professional' sounding intermediate model you will ever find. |

I utilized the WWBW's "Selection Plan" and tried out this and the Intermediate Bulgheroni oboe (both Grenadilla wood). I just wanted something to play in my free time, for church and weddings. At first, I could not tell a difference between the two; they were both easy to play, responded well in all registers (or so I thought). I almost chose the Yamaha only because I liked the case better (yes, it almost came down to the case!). However, when I started playing around with the low notes, the low B flat on the Yamaha was totally flat (almost an entire note). Also, the lower notes on the Yamaha spoke significantly louder than the medium and high registers, so I found myself having to really control the volume. The Bulgheroni, however, was very consistent no matter what register I was in and was in tune. I did not feel like I had to control the volume in different registers, which made for smooth and easy playing. The ergonomics were great, as online reviews have pointed out. I also really like the fact that the Bulgheroni has a loop for a neck strap, in case I want to use one. Both were very similar in sound, but my dad liked the Bulgheroni better in a blind test. I would have went with the Yamaha because of name recognition but for those two significant issues. The Bulgheroni won me over in the end.

I took my niece to try out a couple of oboes. She came across this oboe and I tried it out for myself, for an intermediate oboe it has a sound to die for. You'd think you were playing on a professional oboe, the sound is deep and dark. The low notes are powerful and easy to control, the high range is great, it can be heard over loud groups. The C# and D don't sag, they sound great on an American Scraped reed. The mechanism is smooth and the keys aren't too stiff, Spring action is nice. I came to buy this one for my niece, she loves it, I'm sure you'll love it if you give it a try.
