Product Description
Yamaha
The YMP204 Series Marching Mellophone in F has been designed with the French horn player in mind. The new free blowing response will allow the player to no longer sacrifice tone quality for intonation.
Product Overview and Specifications
Key of F, 3 nickel-plated pistons, .462" bore, 10" yellow brass bell, improved balance, 1st valve slide thumbhook, and MP-14F4 mouthpiece. The YMP-204M Marching Mellophone plays comfortably for French horn players doubling on the mellophone. It enables a free-blowing response, improved intonation over previous models and powerful sound in the upper register. The instrument is ideal for mellophone players who have traditionally had to compromise response.

It's a decent instrument, but it is really awkward for me to hold, mostly the pinky ring, it's so far down away from the valves I can't play any fast licks on it but it has an ok sound. Sounds GREAT in the upper register but in the mind and low register, not so great and it is affected a lot by the weather, it took us like an hour to tune 4 of these mellophones with the rest of our brassline at our school at championships last year. Honestly, if I had to pick between the really old Getzen mellophones we have and this one I'd probably pick this one. But between this or say a king or Quantum, I'd pick the Quantum

I enjoy this Mellophone very much, but never have I played an instrument that varied so much in different climates and temperatures. It gets really affected by heat and coldness, but still a great instrument. (It) takes a lot of muscle to march with though.

My high school uses the yamaha mellophone and I loved it. It stays relatively in tune, free blowing, and has a wonderful sound that doesn't distort as you play louder. The instrument is a little heavy and can strain your back.
