I play a school-owned 842S in my school's top band. First off, it looks amazing and the case complements it well. People in the lower band always remark on how nice the euph looks when I pull it out of the case. The valves are quick and only need oiling about every week. The instrument responds readily in all registers if you have enough air for it, which is not a small amount because of the large bore. But with enough air, you are rewarded with amazing tone and the ability to get very brassy if you're capable. It is more difficult to hit the high register than other euphoniums, but with a lungful of air even an intermediate player can hit a high Bb with relative ease. An experienced player will find that hitting a Db or D above that not overly difficult. In addition, the low range of the instrument is fantastic. For me, double pedal F's and Eb's aren't difficult, and when your low range is developed, you can hit the B natural below that easily, provided you start on the F. The euphonium also has quick response and amazing intonation. There is no water key on the 1st valve tuning slide, which is puzzling since the model below the 842S, the 642, has one. Although the mouthpiece the instrument comes with will do for most repertoire, I suggest investing in a better one. I personally switched to a Denis Wick SM4. When coming up from middle school and auditioning with a YEP-321S, I got 3rd chair top band. When I was using the 842S in the following fall auditions, I achieved 1st chair with ease, and I'm only in 9th grade! Although good playing helped a lot, I couldn't have done it without the 842S.

I bought this horn after returning from a tuba/euphonium conference where I tried out every major high-end euphonium, including Willsons and Bessons. This one outplayed them all. Superb tone and ease of playing through all registers, beautiful, resonant sound, secure and compact valve action. Yamaha seems to have made significant "ergonomic" improvements when they designed the 842S -- the first three valves are closer together, and there is less of a "reach-around" to the fourth valve. As a result, this horn is easier to hold and play than the 642S, which means less fatigue over a long rehearsal or performance. My second choice would have been one of the new Bessons -- the ones being made in Germany -- but none of the horns that I tried out really measured up to this one. So far, I haven't found anything about it that I don't like.

I've played on an 842-S for over two years and there isn't much I can complain about. The response in the low register has got to be the best in the industry. My only gripe is that anything above the F above the staff is very difficult to produce, and it's hindered my playing. I love playing tuba parts on this thing. The tone is wonderful but you've gotta be good to make it sound like that. Overall, I love my 842.

This horn has it all. Great intonation, the most easy response I've ever seen, flawless workmanship. Try this horn before you buy the Willson!
