When I started in fourth grade, on my Yamaha 281 student model I automatically knew Yamaha was the perfect brand. Then, 3 years later, I bought this fantastic instrument, the Yamaha 674 with a standard sterling silver EC cut head joint. I took it out of the plastic and WOW! Just looking it, I was flabbergasted! It’s a beautiful instrument crafted to perfection. As if the looks aren't enough to "wow" you, the way it plays is something else. I played a low A and it was so beautiful I had no idea what to do with it. A month or two later I made all south jersey, and it was all history from there. =] FANTASTIC! Five stars without a doubt. If you're looking for a step up from a beginner instrument, and you're willing to pay a little bit more, this is definitely the way to go!

I started out playing the flute on a Yamaha 281 flute, but after my first year of playing I outplayed it so I decided to get a Yamaha 684H with a gold lip plate. This flute is very wonderful; I made it into the all-region band in my area with this flute. I've also earned many first division performances on this flute, and I was the only middle schooler to get the outstanding soloist award when I used this flute. This flute is PERFECT to use at important auditions, I made it into my high school's wind ensemble as a freshman with this flute. The tone I can get from this flute is constantly crystal clear, and the tone is very flexible; you can make it sound sweet, dark and subtle, and at other times it can sound bright, energetic, and vibrant...depends on what style you put in at the moment. Every note on this flute is easy to get in tune. The key mechanism is very light and smooth, which makes it easier to play very technical pieces which require a lot of finger movement. The keys, in my opinion, are crafted more beautifully then most other brands, but they also feel wonderful when playing, and your fingers won't slip when you are nervous during a performance. Handcrafted to perfection, the key mechanism's has French pointed arms, and white gold springs make the mechanism sturdy but not hard to press. The headjoint is amazing; it is flexible with tone and color styles. I'd recommend this flute to anyone who is an intermediate or advanced student, this flute is even better then the Yamaha intermediates because the intermediates have the exact same headjoint as the student models, so you won't hear a difference with the 300/400 series. The case for this flute is also excellent, very protective but really nice; I have lots of room for my swab/polishing cloth in the case cover. There's been a few times when I accidentally bumped my flute and it survived. Get this flute, and it is guaranteed to never fail you.

I own two of these flutes. I bought the second one for my wife. We are both experienced but non-professional players. I have a degree and background in musical instrument repair. The 684's play nicely and the EC head is nice, although I use a hand made head on mine that is even better. In general they make a nice clear sound that is easy to project throughout the entire range of the flute. The low range is pretty easy on these flutes. The construction of these flutes is excellent for a production made instrument. The scale tends to play a bit sharp for me, but it is easily manageable...that's why I bought the second one for my wife...easier to play duets in tune with each other.
