While other products are not as messy, and may perform better on brand new slides, nothing lasts longer per application than Trombotine. I have had tubes last 6 - 7 years, with no noticeable deterioration on effectiveness. Slide - o - Mix is great IF your slide is brand new, and may be a better choice for young players who can't be trusted to clean a slide properly, but on my 1970's vintage Bachs (36, 42, & 50), who have all seen a great deal of service, Trombotine lasts twice as long, and provides more consistent lubrication per application. The other problem with Slide - o - Mix is that it has limited shelf life. The large bottle thins out and becomes useless in 18 - 24 months.

I have had several directors who just have a knack for putting on slide cream. But...I was born and raised with Trombonetine. If handled correctly, I change my slide cream about every 2-2 1/2 weeks. It’s really hard to go wrong with Trombonetine. With some slide creams, you have the danger of getting too much on the slide. Trombonetine is not affected AS MUCH as other brands. I have bought one tube of it...and have been playing for 4 years now and haven’t had the need to replace it. So it lasts a LOOONNNGG time which is nice also.
