A Phat Cat is an actual single-coil P-90 Soapbar guitar pickup that fits under a humbucker guitar pickup cover and drops into humbucker-equipped guitars. The tone is big and fat, er, phat. It uses two Alnico 2 magnets for more sustain and softer attack. Also, the metal covers provide more shielding and noise reduction than standard soapbar covers. Comes with single-conductor hookup cable. |

I decided to go for something different, so I paired a Neck Phat Cat with a Duncan Custom 5 in the bridge. I've always loved the tone of p-90s in the neck position, but since I play harder rock, I need a humbucker in the bridge. The Phat Cat gives me that great neck tone without forcing me to cut up my beloved guitar, but more importantly, it gave me a new sound. I wired the middle position of my blade selector switch to split the bridge humbucker, pairing the coil with the Neck Phat Cat to create a series connection. The resulting tone is crisp with great highs, punchy, and very clear, even under heavy distortion. This is a great pickup to experiment with.

I've always loved Soapbar pickups. When it came time to replace the bridge pickup in my SG special, I went with a phat cat. I love this pickup. It's so clear and articulate. Good bite. Great mid-range punch. Lots of body. Even with the tone rolled all the way off, it's so clear. This is cool, because you can roll it back and cut out some of the high end bite but still retail all the clarity. I love this pickup more than this review can say. Highly recommended.
