Rico tenor sax reeds are batting 50% or better per box.

No reed is going to be perfect. If you buy a 5 count box of XYZ brand or a 10 count box of ABC brand you are going to find some duds and some good reeds. The trick is how many reeds are good out of that box. What is the percentage of good reeds compared to bad reeds? I find Rico reeds to be batting in the 50% + range which are as good as or better than the higher priced reeds. This also makes them more economical. I find that they give me the sound I want for the kind of work I do. What I am after is a bit of edge with some projection and a good sub tone down to low Bb. They play in tune and those reeds that are a bit too hard are easier to fix than some other brands. I use them for most gigs with a vintage FL Otto Link metal 8* mpc. For concert band I use them with a current Babbitt HR Otto Link 8 mpc. For the price and for the percentage of reeds that play well you cannot beat them. I met a fellow tenor player at the Sax Symposium in Wash DC. He was playing the exact same mpc as I was and using a higher price reed. I let him try one of my Ricos and boy was he surprised. He said he was going to have to give Ricos another chance. Remember most of the great Jazz players played Rico Reeds. Dexter Gordon said it best in the movie 'Round Midnight' "there's nothing like a nice wet Rico Reed".
