Product Description
Rico
Designed to meet the needs of the most discriminating players, Rico Reserve reeds are the result of more than 75 years of reed-making expertise. The high-density, lower-internode cane is precision cut with natural diamond cutters. Optical laser measuring, color video inspection, as well as state-of-the-art polishing come together to produce an artist quality reed that cant be overlooked.
Product Overview and Specifications
Reserve reeds have been literally designed from the ground up, starting with the raw material. The Reserve reeds are made exclusively from lower-internode cane a technique Rico pioneered that yields the highest-density cane available. Only the lower sections of each cane pole are selected. The Rico cane used for Reserve reeds is so exceptional that less than five percent of reed cane qualifies for the new Reserve reeds. The Reserve reed, designed for the most demanding clarinetists, was developed using revolutionary 3-D reed-Modeling software. Months of research, blind surveys, and testing with the input of top symphonic musicians has resulted in a winning design. Each Reserve reed is precisely cut using French cutting techniques on Ricos newly designed, state-of-the-art reed-manufacturing machines. Special diamond cutters were developed to ensure unparalleled precision and consistency from reed to reed. New automated blanking machines have been implemented that incorporate the use of optical lasers that measure the thickness of the reed blank at the heel, center, and tip to the strictest tolerances in the industry. Color video inspection selects the highest quality cane for color and sorts out any flaws, and state-of-the-art polishing and sanding operations produce a glass-like surface to the reed table to ensure consistency. We combined DAddarios 18 years of expertise in the reed market with our reputation for manufacturing innovation to guide the Reserve reed development process, explains J. DAddario Chairman and CEO Jim DAddario. No stone was left unturned at the Rico factory and plantations, resulting in the highest quality reed on the market. Every box of Rico Reserve reeds is sealed with the patented REED VITALIZER automatic humidity-control system (HCS). Reed Vitalizer with auto HCS maintains the same relative humidity inside every box until opened. Reed Vitalizer ensures that reeds will not warp, split, or crack during the time it takes to get from the Rico factory to the musicians mouthpiece.

Ok I must start off by saying these reeds are sweet! I know the difference in quality between the different type Vandorens (I’ve played them all) & the Rico's. Where the Ricos are know for the thinness of tone & intonation inconsistencies it is not so with these. I’ve played the Vandorens for years & while they are good reeds, they take a while to break in & a lot of them tend to be inconsistent. You can buy a box of 10 & only have like 2 good ones, it sucks! So I talked to my sax professor & he recently went to a conference & was told about these reeds. The seller was nice enough to give him a few free boxes for our sax studio. Well my professor let me have one & I was hooked! Almost right outta the box did it play well, very little breaking in time. Another thing I noticed was a fuller sound fat & warm & the response was quicker lower registers to altissimo was good. I play on a Larry Teal for classical & a Berg Larsen for jazz & on both I got a great fat warm sound immediately noticeable by my professors. If you play classical I’d say get a 3, jazz go with a 2 or 2 1/2. But these reeds are a definite must try for all saxophonists!

I was leery as the quality of Rico is pretty well accepted to be less than Vandoren. The Rico reps talked about the changes they have been making to their production and such and were pretty honest (as far as I could tell). I've been using them for months now, and they are just as good as the Vandorens I normally use. I would definitely recommend them.
