The Peavey Zodiac is one of the best values in the sub $500 range. It is far more refined than competing products. The solid maple neck and fretboard available on the sunburst and butterscotch models is coated in polyurethane with a look and feel of a 50's Fender Precision (worth the price of the bass by itself). Frets are very smooth and even better than currently available lower end American basses. The Zodiac has a solid feel and is a tank of a bass that will probably last forever. It is indeed heavier than most modern import models which really influence the tonal quality in a good way. Unplugged, you can hear how the tone originates from the entire bass from stem to stern, unlike cheap imports where most of the tone seems to be noticeable at the bass of the neck or in limited regions of the body. Plugged in you'll find that the pickups are potent with a blend of modern and old school which is comfortable across most genres from jazz to funk to rock. Peavey has simply marketed the Zodiac series incorrectly. It is not just a rock bass, it is far more and one of the best bargains available today.
