Product Overview and Specifications
Dragonfly 4 Fretless

The Dragonfly 4 is Michael Kelly's latest limited edition acoustic bass. It features a new vine style inlay carefully made from real pearl and abalone. The all maple body features great looking quilted maple. This exotic wood not only gives the bass a unique look, but also produces improved attack and acoustic projection. The bass has been equipped with a Fishman active pre-amp and Fishman under-saddle pickup. This includes a side mounted 3 band EQ and volume control. The Dragonfly 4 looks, plays and sounds great, get your hands on one before they are all gone.

Quilt Maple Body
Michael Kelly basses were founded based on the concept that acoustic basses required a different approach from acoustic guitars. The fact is most acoustic basses on the market are just over-sized acoustic guitars with a few less strings. From day one they took a different approach.

They listened to bass players and learned what they wanted improved in acoustic basses. The most consistent complaint about the "generic" basses being offered by the big acoustic guitar brands was that those basses lacked a strong, well defined tone. The notes were muddy and did not project. In 2001 they introduced one of the first production acoustic basses on the market with an all-maple body. This wood selection is not only attractive but a cornerstone of the tone that has helped them become a top acoustic bass supplier worldwide.

Maple is a hard wood with a strong bell-tone. The density of maple allows it to add definition, volume and brightness to the tone of an acoustic bass. These attributes combined with the already large and round sound that comes from the large acoustic body makes for a perfect blend. This produces a unique tone that many players prefer over the other "traditional" options. Play one of these all maple basses to hear the unique tone that it can provide.

Ah the Dragonfly! My first one was fretted and buzzed like an angry insect. Otherwise, quality seemed good. The finish was more “tea” stained than natural, compared to the headstock which was pure natural. I sent it back to exchange for a fretless version. Music 123 was ace about it, I had credit less than 2 days after they received it. The fretless finally arrived, and it is beautiful, purely natural no tea stain. It seemed pretty well set up, but I gave it a little more relief, and put a new bridge saddle in which marginally raised the action on e and g. I put Addario chromes flats on it, and it sounds great, is fun to play and just gorgeous. I have never seen a more beautiful guitar. I just love quilted maple natural gloss and that awesome inlay. Generally excellent workmanship, the inlay is smooth and beautiful. I really like the tone unplugged. Plugged in sounds decent too, but I didn't buy it to plug it in...that’s what my Thunderbird is for! The more I play it, the better it sounds. You can really pluck the strings hard and it produces a clean tone with almost no buzz! You only have to back off a little from full power pluck, and you get totally clean gorgeous tone. There are no dead spots, or anything like that. I love it. I did discover the other day, at the back of the bridge at each far corner, each corner is coming up like a micromilimeter! I hope it doesn't keep going. I will do everything I can to get that stopped in tracks, cause this is one awesome bass! I also have an ovation four string, to which this has similar tone... And then there’s the chief of the collection, the THUNDERCHIEF, which is boomier and less midrange than both others, and totally untouchable for campfire sound and volume. It’s just bigger. But don't get me wrong - the Dragonfly tone is still great, and plenty bassy; I like it for a change to a little more midrange. It’s a lot of fun slipping' and slidin' up and down the neck. It could hold it's own at any campfire jam. Verdict? This is one absolutely gorgeous guitar; sounds awesome and is fun to play. What an awesome design and concept, and nobody else I know does it. (Especially for the price!) The workmanship seems pretty good, but my feeling is that these MK “special limited additions” are a little hit or miss. I think we could expect a little more QC for the price, but I'm just glad I got lucky enough to be able to keep the second (no pun intended) one. It’s a keeper.
