I was blown away by the Meinl-Weston 551! The first note I played on it sounded glorious! It has a big, warm, dark, and strong sound that is great for solo work or for playing in a large ensemble. The tuning is quite good, there's nothing that can't be lipped up or down, but there are a few notes that are more problematic than others. Compensating euphoniums often cause problems for people too because they're heavy, and the fourth valve can be hard to operate, but this horn is lighter than most compensating euphs, especially considering its heavy bell and big sound, and the fourth valve is the better place than on any other horn I've ever played. It feels completely natural. The valves also are flawless. I haven't had any problems with them, and I only need to oil them every couple weeks. And when you'd think it couldn't get any better, the brilliant designers put stunning gold-plated valve caps on the instrument. This is one of the best euphoniums I've ever played, and the price is just right. You owe it to yourself to play this beautiful instrument.
