The suction cup design of this tuner pickup allow it to be used with any instrument that has a flat surface, like a guitar, base, violin, etc. The suction cup is attached to the instrument and as the instrument is played, sound is then transmitted to the tuner. A pickup is better in transmitting sound into the tuner than a built-in mic that always comes with a tuner. The tuner pickup is designed specifically for orchestra and band instrument. For string instruments (violin, viola, and cello), the pickup can be clipped onto the bridge to pick up the sound of the instrument for tuning.
