Starting with the straightforward launch window, students can click between creating new music, opening existing music, or head to the learning center.
The Create New Music section offers a Setup Wizard where they can open up a predefined ensemble or create their own. The Default Document button offers them a blank document with one staff line where they can start writing their music. The Templates area provides 31 preset professional templates ready to go for different styles of music. Utilizing SmartScore Lite by Musitek, the Scanning button allows you to scan a finished page of music which then shows up on the screen with a high degree of accuracy. With all of these options your students can create scores with up to 24 staves for exporting and print out.
In the Open Existing Music section they can open up PrintMusic or other Finale product files, MIDI files, recent files, or import MusicXML files, and more.
If they're having trouble, the Learning Center portion not only gives a Tip of the Day, but it also has QuickStart 'How to' videos, the user manual, and a tutorial guide. That way, if you're busy with one student, they can still get the answers they need.
This edition of Finale PrintMusic software allows pupils to import and export graphics, choose over a dozen different paper textures and colors, and add lyrics if they want. They get Row-Loff marching percussion sounds and a free software synth to listen to their finished composition. They can also use the included MicNotator to play melody from a brass or woodwind instrument and have it directly added to their score. Drum parts can be incorporated with Drum Groove, and the Band-in-a-Box auto harmony effect turns melodies into two or three voice harmonies. There's a guitar and bass tablature option as well as several ways in which the finished music can be shared, from audio files to exporting MusicXML or MIDI files.
Finale PrintMusic 2008 is a great way to introduce your students to musical notation and how music was traditionally created.
