The 7214 is a tough, well-made plastic clarinet that will get beginners off to a good start, and will continue to serve well as a capable backup for outdoors, marching band, and pep band sessions should the player graduate to a fine wooden clarinet as their main performance instrument. My 7214 has pleased me for years with its solid performance and handsome appearance. With its wood grain finish and metal bell ring, it does not look cheap as so many other plastic clarinets do. The best feature of the 7214 is that it has a large bore for a student clarinet, and can generate a rich, full tone with room-filling volume. It has a delightful crispness to the key mechanism, and the power-forged keys are very rugged and tolerant of careless assembly of the clarinet. The action is fairly even up and down the scale with the exception of an annoyingly stiff right hand G#/D# pinky key. A good regulating by a technician can easily even out the action, however. This instrument is not without its quirks; most notably, the throat A and B-flat are a bit stuffy and sharp on my horn, even after a very careful regulation. The plastic model 3V mouthpiece that came originally with my 7214 is terrible, so I'd be sure to ask the experts at Woodwind & Brasswind about a low-cost upgrade to a better mouthpiece, even for a first-time player. While the competing Yamaha YCL-250 is widely regarded as the best plastic clarinet available, it also costs significantly more. I think the 7214 represents a better overall value.
