Pros and cons of gut strings

If you are serious about wanting to experience plain gut strings, La Bella gut strings will definitely do the trick. They are a classic brand of gut string that a lot of the greats used. You will need to have a luthier modify your bridge and nut to accommodate the thicker size of the gut string. I warn you there are some drawbacks to these types of strings that you should be aware of: • They go out of tune frequently, especially for the first few days, and in the warmer months. • They are more expensive than steel strings, and wear out quickly, 6 to 7 months usually. • The E & A strings are round wound and dig up your finger board, which will need dressing more often. • The winding on the lower strings often can come unwound and buzz. • In the warmer months the plain D & G strings get green and sticky. • Over all they are floppier and generally need to be set with higher action to eliminate finger board buzzing. This can make it difficult to play fluently in thumb position and in general can slow you down slightly. But don't let these problems deter you; I could list many problems I have with steel strings. The pay off is a gorgeous pure, warm, colorful sound and thump that only plain gut strings can deliver. I used them exclusively for at least 6 years. They also record brilliantly, you'll sound just like Mingus;) p.s. If you do put them on and they don't sound or feel good right off the bat, don't freak out, they need at least a week to settle and break in before they start to sound good.
