My grandmother bought me this product because the previous school year when I played I would play an F in the staff and it would sound right and then go sharp sounding almost like being above the staff. Anyways I practiced playing different notes and it helped me listen to what the note should sound like and how much air to put through my horn to make the perfect sound. It's also kinda fun : ) To play a song that you have memorized and it tells you what note that you are playing. I love it! I would definitely recommend this product, although if you are looking for one that does the tempo at different speeds, you might want to consider a different one, because this one just tunes, it doesn't do the tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick thing. The pricier ones do though.

I've been using this tuner once or twice a week for years. It easily fits in my shirt pocket, and I don't think I've ever had to change the battery. You can tune using any note on your horn, and also check whether individual notes on your horn are sharp or flat. In my experience, the tuner is very accurate. The LCD panel displays the concert pitch you're playing and a "meter" dial showing the number of cycles sharp or flat. There are three LED lights above the panel that also indicate whether your pitch is flat (red), on-pitch (green), or sharp (red). The tuner will generate Concert A and Concert B-flat pitches. The generated pitch isn't as accurate and can be as much as 10 cycles sharp or flat, but it's useful for initial tuning in noisy environments since, as others have said, the unit will pick up others around you. It's not visible in the picture, but there is an input jack on the right edge of the unit.

This thing is indestructible

I had mine for 3 years, until someone stole it. It had been dropped, stepped on, rained on, thrown, caught, and beaten through Marching Band and Concert band for the past 3 years. In the end, the back was held on by electrical tape, (alright, so it isn't perfectly indestructible) but it has always been the most accurate of any of the varieties of tuners that any of the other members of my section have used. And for 20 bucks after 3 years of that much abuse? I can't wait for my new one to get here. The only thing I wish it had is a back light and that it glowed in the dark. In marching band, tuning for a show at night is a little difficult because you can never tell how far off you are, you just have to keep guessing with the lights. And when one is gone in grass at a night show, it's gone. But for the functionality and the accuracy under pressure, this is worth its weight in gold.

This tuner is rugged. I've dropped it many times over the last 4 years and it always comes back. The lights are easy to read in dark places when you can't see the needle. The clip accessory that connects to the bell of a horn is terrific as you can tune while playing with a group. I also keep one on the stand during studio work. I encourage all my students to get one as well. You can't go wrong for 20 bucks.
