Product Description
Jet Tone
The R&S Euphonium and Tuba mutes are made of a high quality polymer that is virtually indestructible. These mutes give a gorgeous soft tone when played quietly, but unlike other mutes can also produce an "edge" similar to a trumpet mute when played at higher dynamics. Perfect for professional players and schools alike.
Product Overview and Specifications
The Revolutionary Jet-Tone Euphonium and Tuba Mutes

The R&S Mutes
Typically, traditional metal mutes for tuba and euphonium produce a rather stuffy, resistant sound that can be difficult to control. This new mute is made of a highly resonant polymer that produces an incredibly free-blowing, beautiful sound.

The Unique, Patented Adjusting System
Tuba players also face the additional challenge of finding a mute that will fit the many bell sizes and flares that are being manufactured today. The R&S mute has a set of unique adjustable devices (patented) that allows the player to easily fit the mute to any bell size or flare. The adjusters also permit the musician to find the correct accoustic position for the mutes.

Smaller "Footprint" Means More Resonance
Because the adjusting mechanism is based on an 8 point contact system, the actual amount of bell contact is much less than with traditional corked mutes. When corks are used they come in contacct with a significant amount of the bell material which will kill resonance. The "footprint" of an R&S mute actually involves less than 2 square inches of bell surface, keeping the horn's inherent resonance, even while muted.

Indestructible
The polymer that these mutes are made from is pressure molded and can withstand a great deal of punnishment. If any damage were to occur from mis-use it would only be to the adjusting mechanism and repair kits are available for these that are not expensive.

When I first bought and tried this for my euphonium, I thought it was a piece of junk and almost returned it. Then I re-read the instructions about making adjustments with the adjuster pins. I started with the mute being closer inside the euphonium and then worked its way out until I was able to get all notes (high and low range) without loss of tone or control. Its appearance will deceive you. It DOES look like a simple big piece of cheap plastic. It is bigger than I thought it would be (that is neither good nor bad). The sound from the mute, once set up properly for your instrument, is very pleasant. It does not have an edge to it that I have heard from many mutes. It basically retains its sweet sound but at a more silent play. I was also surprised at the control it still gave me while playing. It did take a little time to adjust to the mute and feedback as I played. I cannot compare it to other mutes available since I have never bought one before, but I have heard the results from some mutes on line, and they were very irritating and raspy. My euphonium is an older rotary valve Melton (beautiful instrument!)
