I've just bought this five piece Gretsch Catalina Club rock 5 piece with its astounding 26" bass drum in sliver sparkle finish. The kit comes with excellent quality Evans coated heads on the top of the snare drum and 13", 16", and 18" toms. My kit was already assembled by Ron's Music in Darlington and was near perfectly tuned and ready to play immediately. The bass drum sound is just fantastic even with nothing inside to damp the shell between the two 26" Gretsch heads, which have discrete internal edge rings to reduce overtones, the full coated front head having full size Gretsch logo and the clear back playing head, a smaller Gretsch logo. All the drums have a great tone and a huge authentic presence. I didn't realize until I actually got the kit to my studio and played it that it would really sound this good, though just by gently tapping it in the store it seemed like a winner. I now realize this mega sound is a result of the mahogany shells, which are LOUD! One further plus is the quality of the hardware (folding bass drum spurs, a great ball L-rod style tom holder with universal clamp and rims-style floating rack tom attachment, 6 x floor tom legs) which come with this kit. The floor tom legs in particular are the most heavy duty I've ever seen, much sturdier than Tama, Pearl, Premier or Yamaha by comparison, which definitely surprised me, as I remember seeing older Gretsch kits with less robust fittings the tom. This contrasts nicely with the further refreshing surprise of the physical lightness of the drums to lift and carry, as the shells and tuning lugs seem to be designed to be a light as possible. The Taiwanese manufacturing assembly has not let down the Gretsch name either. All the tom holder boxes have the Gretsch logo deeply embossed into the chrome work and the familiar square metal Gretsch badges sit nicely on the shell wraps. This kit is surely a modern classic, recreating the classic rock set ups of the late sixties to early seventies, but with 21st century benefits. Get one!
