Product Overview and Specifications
BurstBucker 2

BurstBucker 2 is wound in the range of Gibson's '57 Classic, with slightly hotter "vintage" output than the BurstBucker(TM) #1, and works well in the bridge position with a BurstBucker(TM) #1 in the neck position.

The variations in pickup output and tone came from inconsistencies in winding the bobbins, a result of the lack of automatic shutoffs on Gibson's winding machines in the late 1950s. Seth Lover, who invented the humbucker, always said they wound the bobbins "until they were full," and original examples suggest that employees stopped the winding machines after the counter reached approximately 5000 turns. When the two coils in a pickup have a different number of turns, that variation puts a little "edge" or "bite" on the classic humbucker sound. That's the sound BurstBuckers(TM) replicate. (The "creamy" sound that Gibson's '57 Classics replicate comes from equal coil windings.) Gibson then carries the replication process two steps farther, with unpolished Alnico II magnets and no wax-potting of the coils, just like the originals.

These pickups are great. I have the #2 in the neck and the #3 in the bridge of a semi-hollow body guitar and they were both a huge improvement over the stock ones. They both have incredible sustain and a great classic rock/blues tone. I get sounds like early Santana and Clapton/Cream which is what I was looking for. They are both suited well for lead and rhythm playing. I was surprised that when playing a full chord, you can hear every string being struck by the pick. Usually you play a chord and you just hear the chord, but you can actually hear every note in it and it just sounds great. I still prefer the clean sounds of a good strat more than the clean sound these will get though. With the overdriven or distorted tones you get great sustain. After reading other reviews I was expecting to have feedback trouble, especially since I was putting these in a semi-hollow, but I haven't had any microphonics problems. They don't seem as hot as I was expecting which was a little disappointing and that's what garnered the four star rating. But, these are the best pickups I've owned and would buy a new set if I lost these. I have seen them for $30 cheaper at other places online so shop around.
