Product Overview and Specifications
Fostex MR 8

Overview
The Fostex MR-8 is the first solid-state memory recorder in the industry that offers 8-tracks of recording on the very popular CompactFlash card media. The MR-8 comes with a very competitive price point, especially compared to the current digital 4-track memory recorders already on the market.

Design
Fostex's design goal for the MR-8 was to create a digital multitrack recorder with unprecedented ease of operation for musicians who want digital recording and superb sound quality, but also offers the simplicity of their favorite old analog machine. Nearly all the functions of the MR-8 are on the physical knobs and buttons of the top panel. User frustration caused by having to flip through pages and pages of LCD menus, is not an issue with the MR-8.

Simplicity
While the MR-8 may be simple to operate, all the features and functions expected from digital recorders in today's market are present: on-board digital effects, guitar amp/microphone simulators, digital bouncing, auto punch in/punch out, etc. Communication with a PC is provided via the MR-8's standard built-in USB port making it easy for data editing, CD-burning, and file backup.

My band needed a digital recorder to capture our rehearsals so we could archive impromptu ideas. This recorder is amazing for how inexpensive it is. A 40gb HD and USB out is the best selling point. I use a little 4 track mixer to mix down 4 drum mics to the A channel on the Fostex. We then DI the bass into B, the rhythm guitar into C and leads into D. The ridiculous amount of HD space allows us to hit record at the beginning of rehearsal and not stop for the 3 hours we are there.

if you're looking for 8 ACTUAL tracks, don't buy this recorder, because you are really only getting 6, since you have to bounce the other tracks to get even a DECENT stereo sound. without built in EQ settings, it's difficult to get a good sound adjustment for any instrument, and forget about recording 4 tracks at a time, esp with drums, you'll have to reduce the number of mics you normally use just to make room for the other important instruments and vocals. For those working on a very tight budget and don't care much about sound quality, this is for you, because it's not horrible, but if you are looking to get a sound (CD quality) that will represent your band well, you'd be better off going with something double the price....just like anything else, you get what you pay for. we learned the hard way, and will be returning this unit.

The one this I was worried about most when ordering consoles such as this one is the ease of use. This was not a problem at all with the Fostex MR-8. The manual clearly tells you step by step on how to create your first recording, it took a mere 5 minutes to understand how it worked and soon enough I got it to sound just like my live sound. Whether it’s a solo instrument or 4 tracks at a time, you will definitely not go wrong with this thing.
