Product Overview and Specifications
Focusrite Saffire

NAMM Show 2005 saw the launch of the Focusrite Saffire, a new breed of Firewire interface with onboard DSP and 24-bit/192kHz processing. Saffire fuses state-of-the-art hardware with highly integrated software to take audio interfacing one giant step closer to the professional studio experience. Four inputs (two digital) and 10 outputs (two digital) with unrivalled foldback and monitoring options ensure the engineer has all he needs to navigate through a modern recording session. Focusrite build and sound quality, intelligent front-end design and cutting-edge compression, EQ and foldback reverb software combine to guarantee an intuitive and trouble-free recording experience. The brand new software accompanying the Saffire hardware is a revolutionary new platform from the team that produced LiquidControl and the Forte Suite. This stylish application floats comfortably over any recording software and allows extensive control over the sound of the recorded signals and the multiple (monitor and headphone) output paths. Compression, reverb, amp modeling and EQ Saffire-powered plug-ins are included. All four are also available as a suite of plug-ins from within the recording platform in use. Up to five separate user-defined stereo mixes can be created of all incoming signals and recorded tracks from the recording platform. With such comprehensive monitoring/foldback options and onboard high quality signal processing and effects, the Saffire is truly the interface of choice for the serious recording engineer.

The Sapphire preamps are typically Focusrite in their quality and possibly the finest among the portable contenders in the race. The sound is transparent and might be considered to represent that of any upper range mid-priced professional outboard processors. The dual headphone facility, each with its individual setting is well above the competition and very practical. The output facilities are generous and could be conveniently used for 5.1 surround recording. Setting up the provided Sapphire software is a breeze and the built-in compressor is very good on vocals and percussion that is typical of the opto-compressors in the Focusrite line of processors. The parametric EQ is fine too. The foldback reverb is however just basic. The folding stand is certainly a very practical and convenient facility that keeps your mobile carry bag slim. In summary, a very inspiring piece of interface with a couple of well thought-about facilities and excellent sound. Price wise an excellent package too. Highly recommended.

This is possibly the best small-sized outboard hardware interface available. The Focusrite preamps are stunningly transparent and are as good as any mid-priced outboard studio preamps in the market. The Sapphire software offers excellent monitoring features with two headphone outputs with individual selectable settings. The built-in software Compression and Equalization for recording are as good as if not better than other Focusrite products. The facility of adding Reverb to the Mic channels (not recordable) is indeed very clever and handy as well. Installation is a breeze and operation and integration with the bundled Cubase LE sequencer is perfect. The multiple outputs are very convenient and can be effectively integrated into a 5.1 mix down facility.
